Amethyst Sun Pendants with Silver Bails: Unique Pieces from Uruguay

These pendants are a rare miracle of nature. Known as "Amethyst Suns" or "Amethyst Blossoms," they are slices cut from an amethyst pseudo-stalactite—a very rare, cone-like growth form of amethyst. Each pendant reveals a unique, radial crystal structure emanating from one or more cores.

From the Heart of Uruguay to Our Studio

Our Amethyst Suns originate from Uruguay, a country world-renowned also for its deep purple amethysts—and which, fittingly, features a radiant sun on its national flag. We carefully select the rough stones and process them into these unique pendants in our own jewelry studio. The slices are polished to a high gloss on both sides to perfectly showcase their internal patterns. A precise ultrasonic drilling accommodates the 925 Sterling Silver pin bail, ensuring a durable and secure hold.

A Cross-Section of Geological Processes

Each slice is a cross-section of a formation history stretching back thousands to millions of years. You can clearly see the fine crystal points, ranging from clear to light violet, which have grown outwards from a core of agate or calcite.

The amethyst pseudo-stalactites do not form exactly like limestone stalactites (a term reserved for cave formations) but are created by hydrothermal processes in rock cavities (vugs). Mineral-rich water circulates, and as it cools and pressure changes, layers of minerals (often beginning with an agate core) are deposited. Subsequent phases with a different chemical composition (particularly including iron) then lead to the growth of the amethyst crystals around this core. The amethyst-bearing host rocks in Uruguay, from which these "Suns" originate, are of volcanic origin. They were formed during the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana approximately 130 to 140 million years ago.
